Most Anticipated Video Games of 2019

2018 is gone and on to 2019 we go! Last year was an amazing year in gaming with phenomenal releases like Spiderman, Red Dead Redemption 2, and God of War. With our butts already hanging on the edge of our seats for the next release, we go into 2019 with great anticipation. Here is our list of ten of the most anticipated titles to come out this year.

Anthem

Anthem is a highly anticipated game developed by the studio that created the Mass Effect series, BioWare. It’s a third-person shooter/RPG that is set in an open world environment where players wear special suits (AKA: Javelins) that grant superhuman powers. The RPG elements come from the fact that each Javelin fills the role of a traditional RPG classes like Tanks (Colossus), and Fighters (Interceptor). The closest games available at this time that I can compare Anthem with would be Warframe and Destiny.

The hype behind this game is due to the developers behind it. BioWare has been known for their captivating stories, and extensive combat mechanics in games such as the Mass Effect series and Dragon Age: Inquisition. Where Destiny fell short, many fans are confident that BioWare can pick up the pieces and be the ones to make the game that Destiny should have been from the start.

The Division 2

The Division 2 takes place in Washington DC, 7 months after the events of the original game. Similar to the original game, players will be teaming up with others online in an attempt to complete missions and raids in order to take back the capital from marauders and win the civil war for the survivors.

The predecessor was met with decent reviews. However, with the hype surrounding The Division, decent wasn’t good enough to many players. The game was met with complaints of no content at launch and a lackluster endgame. Additionally, the loot system was largely criticized for terrible drops – more often than not, raids and higher level enemies drop meaningless rewards, and it just isn’t worth the effort in attempting the more difficult events. This time around, the publisher, Massive Entertainment, has been listening to the criticisms of the original game and are planning to balance the game around that criticism. Because of the hype of the original game, the effort that Massive Entertainment is putting in to righting the wrongs, and the relatively good reviews of The Division – fans are hopeful and, rightfully, cautious for the sequel.

Days Gone

Days gone is set in a post-apocalyptic open world that is overrun by zombies (aka: Freakers), due to a pandemic that put humanity on the brink of extinction, as well as many animals. Players take control of Deacon St. John, an ex-con turned-bounty hunter, as he fights for survival and uncovers the origins of the zombie infection. Players will have multiple ways to complete this game, and it will have around 30 hours of gameplay assuming that the optimal/golden route is taken.

Given that it doesn’t necessarily differentiate itself in terms of graphics or even storyline, for that matter, there is a lot of skepticism about whether or not this game will succeed. Fans of the game have cited the constant open-world horde/mob threat of zombies is the key to this game’s success as it is one of the more dynamic and unique features that the developers have talked about. This is also the first game in twelve years that Sony Interactive Entertainment has developed for a major console game.

Final Fantasy 14: Shadowbringers

This one is slightly different as Final Fantasy 14: Shadowbringers is actually an expansion for Square Enix’s MMORPG. Following the ending of Final Fantasy 14’s storyline, the player and his/her ragtag group of heroes find themselves in trouble again. This time, instead of embracing the light, the player will be forced to become the Warrior of Darkness in order to save the world.

This expansion follows a massive patch with new classes (blue mage), new weapons (what appears to be gunblades from Final Fantasy 8), new locations and empires, new game mechanics (NPC Trust), as well as a new storyline. It’s one of the biggest updates to be released for an ever-growing MMORPG that can rival the dominance of World of Warcraft.

Outer Wilds

This game has a unique story – you wake up as an astronaut on planet whose star is going supernova in 20 minutes. This essentially means that each campaign will only last 20 minutes. Within this timeframe, the player is allowed to explore the planet to learn about the galaxy’s history, how to escape the planet, etc. However, a super interesting quirk about this game is that the galaxy will “respawn” once the star goes supernova. With the world respawning, the player can explore other parts of the world since the information gathered about, for example, how to get off the planet, stays the same.

This game is the only indie game on the list, and it was also funded back on Fig in 2015. After nearly four years worth of development and testing, the game is finally nearing launch. It really sets itself apart with the respawning mechanics, and that the discoveries you make upon each respawn is cumulative. It keeps the game fresh after each 20 minute play through. I’d be excited to find out the secret as to why this galaxy constantly resets after getting engulfed by a supernova.

Rage 2

Rage 2 is an FPS developed by Avalanche and id Software, and published by Bethesda. The game takes place thirty years after the original Rage, and follows Walker, the last ranger, as he tries to survive a post-apocalyptic world, home to mutants due to an asteroid strike that occurred prior to Rage.

The original game garnered outstanding reviews when it was released in 2010. As with most games that had amazing reviews but an incredibly long hiatus – the hype is real and the bar is set astronomically high. However, unlike the other decade long sleepers on this list, Rage 2 has a lot more on the line: Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry all have had multiple successful prequels, sequels, spin-offs, etc. but Rage is still in its infancy. The future of this series is heavily dependent on how well Rage 2 does, and if it can capture the same fun and excitement that the original Rage did all those years ago. Unfortunately, not everything is currently all sunshine and rainbows as many fans have already voiced their negative opinions on the colorful artistic style that Rage 2 is trying to go for.

Devil May Cry V

Dante and Nero are back! This game takes place after the events of Devil May Cry 2 – Nero has lost his Devil Bringer arm, and has single replaced it with a robotic prosthetic called Devil Breaker. Meanwhile, a mysterious man named “V”, approached Dante’s to take care of a series of demon attacks that occurred all over the world. With the mystery of who stole Nero’s arm and this sudden string of demon attacks, Nero and Dante will be teaming up to put a stop to whoever is causing all this.

Even though this series has had a huge fan following, it is over a decade since the last Devil May Cry game came out. Because of how long it has been and the dedicated fan-base, many were extremely excited when they saw the E3 trailer drop in June of 2018. Even looking at Capcom’s financial reports for game units sold, the DMC series is only behind Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, and Resident Evil. However, unlike the other three game series, the last time Devil May Cry had a release was back in 2008. There is a lot of potential in Devil May Cry V, and the future of the series could be dependent on how well this game sells.

Cyberpunk 2077

This game is based off the popular 1980’s tabletop game, Cyberpunk 2020. The story is based around V, a merc-for-hire in the dystopian Night City, where the rich live in the top floors of massive buildings, while the poor fight for survival on the streets. V is extremely customizable from the gender, appearance, attribute points, sexuality, and background. The story is also very dependent on the choices that the player makes.

One of the biggest reasons for the hype around Cyberpunk 2077 is that the same studio that made highly acclaimed Witcher series, CD Projekt Red., is developing it. This studio is well known amongst the gaming community for very strong storytelling and gameplay, and are anti-micro transactions. There is a ridiculous amount of customization in the game, and so many different routes that the story can go. Along with the base game, CD Projekt Red announced that any DLC will be on par with the very well-received Witcher 3 expansions.

Resident Evil 2

This is a remake of one of the most well sold games in Capcom’s history. Players will be rejoining Claire Redfield and Officer Leon S. Kennedy as they attempt to make their way out of the zombie-infested Raccoon City, while trying to figure out what happened to their loved ones and the residents.

The original Resident Evil 2 game for the Playstation sold almost five million units, landing it as the 6th most sold game. Resident Evil, as a franchise, takes up three places in the top five most sold Capcom games, and is also the second most sold franchise in their extensive lineup.

Kingdom Hearts III

Returning after what seemed like an eternity, Sora, Donald, and Goofy are back in Kingdom Hearts 3 to save Kingdom Hearts with the seven guardians of light. Meanwhile, Riku and Mickey are off searching for Ventus, Terra, and Aqua to help finally defeat Master Xehanort and the thirteen darkness.

Probably the most anticipated game on this list, fans of the Kingdom Hearts series have been waiting thirteen years for the final chapter of a beloved series. One quirk about Kingdom Hearts, for the uncultured, is that Disney characters have always been integral to the storyline. With the series having been on hiatus for thirteen years, fan are dying to explore all the new Disney worlds included such as Big Hero 6, Monsters Inc, Frozen, and Tangled.

Conclusion:

This is looking like an incredible year of gaming, and who knows what else could have slipped under our radar. Will this beat out 2018? There’s only one way to find out – my wallet is already starting to cry.
